Period 4 Spring 2011

Freedom of speech script
The scene opens up with two men standing behind separate podiums (On separate sides of the stage)speaker 1 begins to speak. and supports the right to have freedom of speech.

Speaker 1:(speaking in a smart tone of voice) I am here today to talk to you about the freedom of speech. We should have the freedom to say what we want, where and when we want. One place in particular, School. In school kids do not have the right to say what they want. For example, in the court case Morse v. Frederick....

The scene blackens and reopens with a teenage kid and a teacher standing center stage. The student and teacher appear to be arguing.
Teacher: What is that in your hands?
Student: What does it look like. ( he pauses for a few seconds.) It's a poster. I didn't know having a poster in my hand at school is a crime. So please step out of my way.
Teacher: Can I at least see what it says.
Student: I don't have to show you. Just leave me alone.
Teacher:Hand it over
Student: No, it belongs to me and I don't have to show you.
Teacher: Hand it ovProxy-Connection: keep-alive Cache-Control: max-age=0 . Now
Student:(first grunts then says) Whatever. Here,( pause) be my guest.
(The student hands the poster over to the teacher. The teacher starts to read the poster. The teacher gets really distraught.)
Teacher: What is this? Why does it say that?
Student: It says " Bong hits 4 Jesus," and it says that because I have the right to have it on there.
Teacher: No you don't
Student: It's not lProxy-Connection: keep-alive Cache-Control: max-age=0 e I was going to hang it up in school, I was going to go across the street with a couple other students and hold it up over there.
teacher: It doesn't matter it is still inappropriate to have in school in the first place.
Student: Well maybe the courts need to do something about that.
Teacher: Well maybe you should write a letter, but in the mean time you have detention.

The scene fades away, returning to the two men at the podium.
Speaker 1: You see students in public schools don’t have the same rights as adults and that’s where everything begins. Just because there are certain things you can’t say that doesn’t mean that you don’t have the right to say them once you enter a school. If the kids don’t learn that they have rights when they are young, our future will be filled with people that will be afraid to say what they believe in. This will be

(Speaker 2 joins into the conversation, supporting how speech rights should be limited.)

Speaker 2: Just because you right to say something doesn't mean that it is all right. Saying that hurts others or their ideas is just wrong. I know everyone is entitled to have there own opinion, it doesn't mean who should say it to everyone you know. For example in the court case Snyder v. Phelps ....
The scene blakens and we come to a group of people standing holding signs that read " God hates fags," and " God hates Pennsylvania." In front of them is a group of people who are grieving over a loss of a love one.
Protester 1: God hates fags
Protester 2: And Pennsylvania
Griever 1: Can you just leave us alone, we are mourning the loss of my son(or daughter).
Protester 1: Well we have the right to say what we want.
Protester 2: And you can't do anything about.
Griever 2: Do you really have to say that now and hear of all places. I mean take it some where else, how would you feel if someone did what your doing to you and family. Would you mind it or would you get angry? Please just leave us alone.
Protester 2: No, we are staying and you'll just have to like it.
The grievers turn around and starts to weep. Scene fades and returns to the men at the podium.
Speaker 2: You see that family got really upset over people saying hurtful things about their son( or daughter). THey couldn't do anything to stop them and they keep on doing it to other grieving families. We as the people should step in say enough is enough and change the law to a more specific freedom of speech.
Announcer: Well thats it for tonight's debate. Stay tuned for next weeks debate on Gun Contol. Good night and have a fantastic tomorrow.
